Disclaimer: This article is all about drafting patterns and choosing the right fabric but not about sewing the piece. If relevant, I’ll attach video instructions on how to do so at the end.

THE RAGLAN SWEATER

These are the sewing pattern instructions for the polo sweater. This design is an oversized sweater with long cap sleeves, with side openings that are rounded and polo collar without a stand and with a placket. This pattern is easy to draft, but sewing the collar is more for an intermediate level.

DIFFICULTY

These are the main characteristics of this pattern:

  • FOUNDATION: Oversized stretch (instructions here)
  • NECKLINE: Polo collar with a placket
  • SLEEVES: Low cap height, Long (Instructions for the foundation here)
  • DETAILS: Side rounded openings starting at the waist line

This pattern should take you around 1h to draft and 2h to sew (both times assuming you are a beginner)

FABRIC

This pattern uses two types of fabric plus interfacing, but the second type of fabric is optional as it is only used for the collar and placket.

  • Main fabric: 1.5 to 2m depending on the length of the sweater and the sleeves
  • Secondary fabric: 0.5m should be more than enough
  • Interfacing: 0.5m should be more than enough

If you’re using this pattern as a sweater, go for thicker fabrics (225g/m2), otherwise you can use thinner fabrics (170g/m2). These are the fabrics I used:

  • Main fabric (Cotton jersey): 95% Cotton, 5% elastane, 225g/m2 stripped
  • Secondary fabric (Cotton jersey): 95% Cotton, 5% elastane, 220g/m2 in white
  • Interfacing: medium weight and I interfaced all the pieces from the collar and placket

Drafting Instructions

STEP 1 - The Foundation

Draw a line mid-shoulder that is perpendicular to the hem, and add ease there. I added 2cm but it will depend on how oversized you want the pattern to be.

For the sleeve draft a low cap height long sleeve and leave it as it is.

STEP 2 - The Collar

Drafting the collar:

  • Measure the front and back necklines
  • Create a rectangle where the length is the front and back necklines and the width is 7cm (or whichever collar width you choose). Separate the front and back
  • Draw a curve from where the back neckline ends to the end of the rectangle, 1.75cm up
  • Extend the edge of the collar 2.5cm

The placket opening is drafted at the front pattern. For this example the width is 3cm and the length is 15cm.

  • Placket width: 2 x placket width = 6cm
  • Placket length: 15cm
  • Front opening: 1/2 placket width – 1cm (in this example 0.5cm)

STEP 3 - The Opening

This step is optional but I like to have a side opening from the waistline that is rounded. You can create this opening however you want.

When sewing, I use bias tape to finish the hem so it’s not visible.

STEP 4 - The Seam Allowances

The last step is to add the notches, pattern information and seam allowances.

  • Add 1cm (3/8inch) seam allowances everywhere except for the centre front (CF) and back (CB), and the hem of the sleeve
  • Add 2cm (3/4inch) at the sleeve hemline
  • Do not add any ease at CF or CB for the main pieces and for the collar

I hope you enjoyed these Sewing Pattern Instructions for a Polo Sweater and good luck sewing the piece!
